Elastic cord to help creativity

Elastic cord can come in many different forms. You can find elastic cords covered in fabric. This kind of elastic cord is perfect for making jewellery with large beads. For example, if you are making bead jewellery with small children and you are using large plastic or wooden beads. Slightly thicker fabric-covered elastic cord is preferable for this kind of project.

If you're involved in a project that requires slightly finer beads, or perhaps the very small delica or seed beads, then you'll need to use very thin nylon jewellery elastic. Be aware that there are many different thicknesses and colours, and we stock both flat and round jewellery elastic. What is best for your project depends on what your project is. You are welcome to contact our customer service if you aren't sure and need help finding the right product.

Beautiful projects with elastic cord

If you’re someone who likes to make your own jewellery, you can't really avoid using very thin elastic cord. For example, when you're making bracelets or necklaces, fine jewellery elastic is the right choice for you.

Just as you can get jewellery elastic in different thicknesses, you can also find jewellery elastic in different colours. This enables you to find the elastic that matches the colours you have chosen for your jewellery. This makes the elastic as discreet as possible, and you'll be looking at your beautiful jewellery instead of the elastic behind it.

Of course, you can also choose to go the other way and choose coloured elastic that stands out in relation to your beads. In this way, you're making a statement and make it clear that it is intentional that you're making the elastic visible.

Make your own jewellery with jewellery elastic

Our jewellery elastic is most often used when customers are making bracelets with smaller beads. If you want to use larger beads, remember to buy jewellery elastic that is relatively thick so that it can support the heavier beads. For tiny beads like delica and seed beads, thin nylon elastic is perfect.

Measure how long your bracelet should be. You could measure another bracelet you have that you know fits you. A bracelet for a woman should usually be about 16-18 cm long. You can of course cut the elastic to make it longer than that. After all, you need something for tying a knot on the bracelet.

Once you have your elastic, you can start threading beads onto it. The stiffness of your elastic depends on how thick it is. If you use very thin elastic, it is worth using a beading needle when you need to thread the beads. This will speed up getting the beads on the elastic string.

If you want to design beads in a specific pattern, it is a good idea to lie the beads in a pattern on the table in front of you, to ensure you get the same pattern all the way. You can easily add pendants that hang freely from the bracelet if you like. Just make sure they aren't too large in relation to the thickness of your elastic. It would be such a shame if your bracelet broke because the elastic was too thin.

Tips and tricks when using elastic cord

When you make jewellery with jewellery elastic, there are a few tips and tricks that are good to know. This will make your work with the elastic much easier.

The most important and best trick is to remember to make a secure knot when you connect the ends of your work. You can do this by tying a simple double knot on the elastic. Make sure to pull the beads together tightly, but remember that there has to be space on the elastic for the bracelet to stretch so that you can get it over your hand.

Once you have tied the double knot, you have to pull the knot tight so that it doesn't accidentally come undone. You can do this by moving the beads on both sides of the knot a little away so that you can get hold of the knot. Hold all four ends of the elastic. In other words, both the loose ends and the ends that are part of the bracelet. Then very gently pull to make the knot tighter. You must pull all the way until there is no more stretch in the elastic and the knot has become as small as possible. Remember to make sure the beads are pulled together so that the elastic doesn't become too long.

When the knot is as small as possible, cut off the ends and the knot will stay in place. If you want to be 100% sure that the knot won't open, carefully add a drop of super glue to the knot, so it's also held together by the glue. Make sure not to get any glue on the beads or your fingers.
