Imaginative sock hand puppets

Give new life to boring white socks and transform them into colourful and fun sock animals and dolls! Draw patterns with multi markers and cut fun details out of felt. You can then add scrubby yarn to make wild hair or a fire-breathing dragon. Finish with colourful pom-poms. Now you only need to come up with a fun story to play out with your new sock puppet friends.

How to do it Download the templates/recipes

Follow the instructions provided and cut out the stencils. Cut out the individual pieces in felt in the colour of your choice. A yellow mouth and a pink tongue are used here.

Attach sticky base along the edge of the felt piece that forms the mouth.

Press the felt piece onto the bottom of the sock.

Add a strip of sticky base along the straight edge of the tongue and attach it to the mouth as shown. You can also add fangs or a kissing mouth using the stencil to cut them out of felt.

Twist scrubby yarn around your hands until you have the amount you want to use to decorate your sock animal. The next steps teach you how to make hair for the top of the head. Follow the same steps to make the fire that spews out of the dragon’s mouth (use both red and yellow).

Cut the yarn once you have the desired amount.

Cut a piece of yarn about 20 cm long and tie it around the bundle of yarn a few centimetres from the top.

Tie two knots tightly around the bundle.

Now cut all the loops at the other end of the bundle.

Press the yarn firmly onto the middle of the top of the sock (on the opposite side of the tongue) with a good dab of sticky base.

Draw details with a creative multi marker. For example, draw a pink stripe around the mouth. You can also decorate the body with dots and stripes. Allow the marker to dry until it no longer transfers before continuing.
