Technique School: Coarse Crackling with Facetten-Lack

Crackling is a technique for obtaining the look of an antique piece of art, where the varnish has crackled over time. This is achieved by the lacquer and the paint working against each other; here with coarse crackling using Facetten-Lack.

How to do it
Guide step %d
1.   Paint the item with either dark or light acrylic paint: Plus Color craft paint. (Always in contrast to your chosen Facetten-Lack, so the effect will stand out). Leave to dry.

2.   Apply a coat of glue lacquer all over your item (we have used A-Color Allround medium) for the best possible adhesion. Leave to dry.

3.   Apply a 2-4mm thick even layer of Facetten-Lack, using a spatula. Leave to dry for approx. 24 hours and the lacquer begins to crackle.
