Create your own bag with 4 mm of macramé nylon cord and easy basic knots. You start with the bottom of the bag and then macramé both sides around it. To make the handles, you divide the cord into four and then knot them together. For the handle of the bag, you cut extra cord to knot and wrap around the other cords. You will need a total of 60 m of macramé nylon cord.

How to do it

1 Cut cords: 20 x 2.20 m, 4 x 2 m and 2 x 3 m.
2 Make the bag from the bottom up. Start by finding the centre of the 20 pieces of 2.20 m cord. Use a bamboo stick or similar tool to mark the bottom and place the 1.10 cm cords on each side of the stick.
3 Make a square knot with the 1st and 4th cords around the 2nd and 3rd cords. The first knot should be in the middle of the cords and will form the bottom of the bag.
4 Repeat a total of five times until all cords are knotted.
5 Now place the knots 4 cm apart on the bamboo stick. Tape them to the stick with masking tape for easier control.
6 Make a double knot with the first two cords from the back and the first two from the front. Make the knot around the two cords in the middle 4 cm from the last row of knots.
7 Continue with the next cords, tying two cords from each side around the two middle ones to form a V-pattern. The front consists of six double knots.
8 Continue on the other side of the bamboo stick, which will be the back of the bag.
9 Create a diamond pattern with the next row of knots. Make a double knot with two cords from each knot around the two middle knots. Make them 4 cm from the last row of knots.
10 Make several rows of double knots on both the front and back of the bag for a total of ten rows – including the row with the tape.
11 Now place the fabric bag into the knotted bag before making the handles.
12 Gather the cords in eight bundles of five cords (four on the front and four on the back). Tie them together in a loose knot over the edge of the fabric bag.
13 Tie the knot onto one bundle of cords and make the handle by tying double knots around three cords – around 6 cm from the last row of knots.
14 Make the knotted piece with five double knots at a slight angle, as shown in the picture.
15 Now gather the eight bundles of four cords each and use them to make the two handles of the bag.
16 For the handle, you will need 2 x 2 m of cord for each side and 1 x 3 m for the top.
17 The bundles of cords should result in a handle with a finished length of 29–30 cm. See the picture in step 22. Take a piece of 2 m cord and find the middle. Wrap the cord around the bundle of cords and use it to tie double knots around one bundle of cords in the handle.
18 Repeat step 17. Make a total of 12 double knots around the four bundles of cord.
19 For the last part of the handle, you will need 3 m of cord. Make a gathring knot by making a loop and a loose end for wrapping.
20 Wrap the entire handle tightly.
21 Finish the wrapping by pulling the end of the cord through the loop and pulling the loose end at the start of the wrapped part. Pull until the ends of the cords are hidden and fastened under the wrapped part.
22 Also make the handle on the back of the bag, so that the finished length of the handle is 29 cm.
