Make two different types of vases, a candle holder and a bowl in self-hardening clay. Each of the items has a unique, handmade look that fits right in with the latest interior design trends – and you can also paint them to create an eye-catcher wherever you place them in your home.

How to do it
Vase made with slab technique Cut off the top of the bottle so it has a height of approximately 7.5 cm.
2 Knead around 300 g of clay thoroughly.
3 Roll the clay into a ball.
4 Roll out the ball to a thickness of about 1 cm.
5 Mark a circle in the clay with a diameter of about 8 cm and cut it out. The edge should be frayed.
6 Now scrape the centre of the circle with a modelling stick.
7 Press the bottle firmly down into the centre of the circle.
8 Knead all excess clay thoroughly. Roll it out to a thickness of about 0.5 cm, a width of about 13 cm and a length of about 27 cm. It is not a problem if it is rolled out a little longer or wider because the excess clay can simply be cut away.
9 Cut the clay lengthwise to create a sharp edge – but it should still have a width of about 13 cm.
10 Gently fold the clay around the base of the vase. Press firmly around the edges of the vase to make sure that the clay sticks.
11 Shape the clay slightly with your hands at the top to create a wavy/draped look.
12 Now cut off the excess clay.
13 Join the clay together where the ends overlap by pinching and smoothing the clay with your fingers.
14 Use your fingers and a little water to smooth the seam and any rough spots. Allow the clay to dry for at least 48 hours.

15 Once the clay is dry, you can paint it however you like.
Bowl made with slab technique Knead around 250 g of clay thoroughly. Shape it into a ball.
17 Roll out the clay to a thickness of about 4 mm.
18 Take a bowl, glass or other round object.
19 Wrap the clay around it. Shape and fold the edges to create the desired look. Allow to dry for at least 48 hours.

20 You can now paint the clay however you want.
Candle holders made from self-hardening clay Knead about 200 g of clay thoroughly.
22 Roll the clay into a long, thin sausage shape.
23 Wrap the clay coil around the candle cuff until firmly in place.
24 Finish by tying a knot to give the candle holder a sculptural look.
25 Dip your finger into water and then smooth out the clay until it has a fine, even surface. Allow to dry for at least 48 hours.
26 You can now paint the clay however you like.
Vase made with coil technique Cut off the top of the bottle so that the bottle has a height of around 7.5 cm.
28 Knead 250 g of clay thoroughly.
29 Roll it into a long, thin sausage shape of about 7 mm thick.
30 Roll out a base with a diameter of about 6.5 cm. Score around the edge of the clay so that the clay coils will bond together.
31 Press the bottle firmly to the base to secure it.
32 Continue wrapping the coils around the bottle and scoring them to make them bond together, as shown in the picture.
33 Continue until the entire bottle is covered. Allow to dry for at least 48 hours.
34 If the clay splits or cracks slightly while drying, you can easily fix these. Start by moistening the crack with water.
35 Now take a small bit of clay and work it into the crack.
36 If necessary, use a modelling stick to push the clay all the way in. Allow the repaired area to dry.
37 You can now paint the vase however you like.
