Crochet your own placemat in thick yarn and add thin cotton yarn for a nice striped effect. Placemats are a great beginner's project if you have little crocheting experience. The thick yarn helps you make progress quickly – and you only need to work with three types of stitches.

How to do it
1 Print out the instructions in PDF format found at the bottom of the page. Crochet the placemat using a size 10 crochet hook
2 Crochet half treble stitches on the front and double crochet stitches on the back. Make the stripes by crocheting with both the base colour and a thin cotton thread.
3 Fasten off the ends with a knitting needle.
4 Iron/steam the placemat into shape under a damp tea towel (30 cm x 37 cm).
