Fabric interfacings and shoulder pads

Interfacing (often known by its brand name, Vlieseline) is ideal for ironing onto the 'wrong' side of textiles to provide reinforcement and as an inlay material. Interfacing has a heat-activated (iron-on) adhesive on one or both sides. It comes in a range of sizes as well as in rolls.

Use interfacing for your next textile project

Do you love working on textile projects? Then you might already be in full swing with everything from dresses, blouses, jumpers, blazers and much more. However, the fabric you're working with won't always form the way you want it to. Fortunately, this is where interfacing can come in very useful.

Interfacing is an inlay material that you can iron on textiles when you want to create a specific shape or stabilise your fabric. It’s very useful when one of your creations has to fall or sit in a certain way. Just imagine how the collar of a top might sit if the interfacing doesn't help hold it in place.

Our selection offers  interfacing in a variety of different sizes, so that the material can best match what you are working on.

How do you work with interfacing?

Considering how ingenious interfacing is, it's relatively easy to work with. Before you start using the material, it's a good idea cut it to fit the area that needs to be stabilised. Now iron it on directly and see the result immediately afterwards.

Remember that the interfacing is ironed on the reverse side, where the ironing glue should also face downwards.

The reason for using an iron for the interfacing is that the glue will melt when it comes into contact with the heat. Of course it's important to adjust the heat of the iron to the fabric you are using, so that you take the best possible care of it. And take care to avoid using the steam function of the iron when applying your interfacing.

What is the difference between interfacing, vliesofix and vilene?

If you’re looking for an interfacing, you’re bound to come across vliesofix and vilene too. But what exactly is the difference between these three? We will clarify it for you here.

Basically, there is only ironing glue on one side when it comes to interfacing. With vliesofix, the ironing glue is reversed on both sides. This means vliesofix is also ideal when you need to connect two layers of fabric. If, on the other hand, we take vilene, this fabric also goes by the name, water soluble plastic  – and there's a very good reason for this.

If you take two layers of vilene and place fabric remnants and yarn between them as you sew, the water soluble plastic dissolves when put into lukewarm water. This allows you to be extra creative in making patterns, e.g. for a scarf when you use vilene.

All three variants are equally easy to work with. So don't hesitate to use them next time you’re making something creative out of textiles.

Other projects where interfacing can be used:

One of the things that makes it extra fun to work with interfacing is that you can use the material for other things than just clothes. For example, you can make atmospheric lanterns that can spread extra cosiness in the dark. Depending on the season, you can choose motifs to iron on the interfacing to give your lantern an extra personal edge. It can be a fun project to include the youngest members of the family, as you can easily work on this creative project together.

Interfacing can also be used if you want to create a runner for placing advent gifts. Or maybe you'd like to make a tote bag that you can take to work, school or when shopping. In both of these examples, interfacing can provide exactly the extra reinforcement the fabric needs.
