Corrugated card and board is not just for packaging

Here in our extensive webshop, you can find a wealth of different creative items, accessories, tools and decorative items. The most obvious things to work with when it comes to paper products may be paper and card, but you may not have considered using corrugated card and board for your creative projects.

Corrugated card and board isn't only useful for packing things in to protect them. These types of cardboard can also be used for everything from utensils and decorative items to supplies for other creative pursuits.

In our product assortment here at Creativ Company our focus is on attractive and useful things – and this includes corrugated card and board. We stock both corrugated card in sheets and corrugated board in rolls.

The card and board comes in a range of measurements and the corrugated board also comes in various weight classes.  You can choose to purchase corrugated card in weight classes such as 80 or 120 gsm. Please note that the gsm will often be unspecified for the various corrugated board products.

What's the difference between corrugated card and corrugated board?

There are several differences between corrugated card and corrugated board, but one of the main differences is that the board consists of three layers, where the middle layer is corrugated and the two outside layers are smooth. In comparison, corrugated card is simply a heavy-duty paper material that has been given the characteristic ruffled shape.

The brown cardboard, which lacks any outer liner boards, is comparable to the middle layer of the traditional brown corrugated board. This means that it generally won't contain glue. If there is glue in the cardboard then it will be part of the paper material itself and not an adhesive between several layers.

When looking at paper products in general, it is primarily the weight that determines whether the product is defined as paper, card or cardboard. Roughly speaking, ordinary paper products weighing under 150 gsm are called paper, while anything that weighs 150 to 600 gsm is referred to as card. Last but not least we have cardboard, which is any sturdy paper product weighing more than 600 gsm.

What should you do with your leftover corrugated cardboard?

Once you've finished cutting and sticking with your corrugated cardboard, you'll need to dispose of it somehow. For a long time, you weren't supposed to throw the ordinary brown corrugated cardboard in the recycling bin due to the glue and according to waste sorting and how easy it is/was to recycle. This has changed, so today most municipalities allow you to put corrugated cardboard in the recycling bin.

This is presumably because technology has made it possible for better sorting of waste, and because a lot of corrugated cardboard today contains biodegradable glue. Before throwing corrugated cardboard away in your recycling bin, you should check whether the municipality where you live will accept it. You should also make sure that the corrugated cardboard is both clean and dry before placing it in the recycling bin or recycling it.

Classic brown or a more exciting colour?

The classic brown colour of corrugated cardboard is nice enough, but not exactly exciting. Nor is it especially suitable for a variety of craft projects. You can either paint the cardboard to get the colour you want, or you can consider getting corrugated cardboard in a range of different colours.

Here on our webshop you can find card and board in the classic brown colour, but you can also buy corrogated cardboard in an assortment of colours. These packs typically come with a good selection of shades, so there’s something for every taste and project.

If you want to make a figure of a dog with brown fur out of corrugated cardboard, then the classic brown colour is probably fine, but if you want to make other things, people or animals that have different colours, then it can be a good idea to have plenty of different coloured cardboard and paper on-hand.

What can you make with corrugated card and board?

What's special about corrugated card and corrograted board is the fluted or ruffled structure of the paper material. These ruffles provide a slight 3D effect and help make the card or cardboard a little firmer. You can find lots of different ideas on the internet for inspiration on what you can use corrugated card and corrugated board for. Of course, you can always just use corrugated board to wrap up those things you want to protect, but you can also make decorative items and toys with it.

Some specific examples of what you can make out of corrugated card and board include:

  • Corrugated cardboard clowns
  • Box with a lid, where the corrugated card decorates the edge
  • Homemade play town made from recycled materials and corrugated card
  • Toys/decorations made from coloured corrugated card (e.g. display boxes or heads on sticks)

You can look up the ideas in our idea catalogue for instructions on how to make the different things. You can also see specific ideas for the individual product. You do this by clicking on the product page or by tapping/clicking on QuickView.

It's possible that there will be no specific suggestions or ideas as to what you can use the ordinary corrugated board for, in which case you'll have to think of an idea yourself or search for information elsewhere. You are also very welcome to use corrugated card/board in the normal way, i.e. as packaging.
