Knotted macramé Santa for hanging

Make your own Santa Claus decoration for hanging on the wall using the macramé knotting technique. Knot it using two different colours of macramé cord – red for Santa’s hat and white for Santa’s beard. This is an easy knotting project that doesn't take long to make. You will need 15 m of red cord, 30 m of off-white cord and a 20 cm stick.

How to do it

1   Cut 1 x 2 m and 1 x 8 m of cord.

2   Secure the 2 x 1 m cord using a clamp or tape. Find the middle of the 8 m cord that goes behind the two 1 m cords. Tie a half square knot around it.

3   Tie a half square knot with 25 cm of cord. Insert a 20 cm stick here.

4   Continue with the half square knot around the two cords and stick of approx. 16 cm.

5   Knot until the last side is also 25 cm.

Tassel   Cut a piece of cardboard 18 cm high and twist the macramé cord around it 20 times. Also cut 2 x 60 cm of cord.

Beard   Cut 1 x 80 cm of cord to make the beard. For the moustache: 8 x 10 cm. For the beard: 12 x 35 cm, 12 x 50 cm and 12 x 70 cm.

Tassel   Find the centre of the 60 cm cord and tie the tassel together at the top with a square knot.

9   Remove the cardboard disc and make a gathering knot using the other 60 cm piece of cord.

10   Finish the macramé gathering knot by hiding the ends behind the cord.

11   Cut off the ends.

12   Cut off the ends so that all strings in the fringe are of the same length.

13   Tie the Santa hat together with the tassel and tie a square knot.

Beard   Attach 1 x 80 cm of cord with a lark’s head knot to the left side of the stick to start making Santa’s beard.

15   Make the beard in three different lengths, which are then folded in half. Attach the 80 cm of cord using a lark's head knot. Start with 6 x 35 cm, followed by 6 x 50 cm, 12 x 70 cm, 6 x 50 cm and, finally, 6 x 25 cm.

16   Attach the cord beard with a slight curve and secure it with a lark’s head knot on the right side of the stick.

17   Tie the beard using four cords and a square knot made with 2 x 2 pieces of cord.

18   Make a total of nine double knots.

19   Shift the second row of square knots by 4 cm compared to the row above to form a diamond pattern (eight knots in total)

20   Skip the first two knots on the third row and tie square knots again to make a diamond pattern. There should be a total of five knots.

21   Make the fourth row with two square knots, which you shift from the previous row.

22   Cut the beard into shape.

23   Tie together a bundle of 10 cm cords using one of the cords. Comb the ends using a comb.
