Firkantet bakke med terrazzo

Cast a square terrazzo tray. You start with a thin layer of casting compound that you then break into small terrazzo flakes. Afterwards, you use casting powder, water and craft paint for the tray itself. Once the tray has hardened, you remove it from the mould and sand it to reveal the beautiful terrazzo effect.

How to do it

1 Start by finding the following for the terazzo flakes: 50 g resin cast mix and 15 ml water. For the mould, there is 100 g resin cast mix, 35 ml water and 5-10 ml craft paint.
2 Start by making the terazzo flakes. - Mix 50 g resin cast mix with around 15 ml of water. Set aside a little bit of the water to add if necessary for a thicker consistency.
3 Spread the mass thinly and evenly on a piece of plastic until approx. 3 mm thick.
4 After around 90 minutes, the mass should have hardened and you now break it into smaller flakes of 3-7 mm. Place the mass between two layers of plastic, for example, and use a hammer to break it.
5 Stir 5-10 ml of craft paint into 35 ml of water until the paint is completely dissolved.
6 Stir the coloured water into the resin cast mix – but first set aside a little bit. This can be used to make the consistency thicker.
7 Place a layer of terrazzo flakes smoothly on the bottom of the mould. Mix the rest of the flakes into the coloured casting compound. If necessary, thicken with a little water.
8 Pour the mixture into the mould. Prevent the terrazzo flakes from collecting on one side of the mould. Fill to 1-2 mm from the edge.
9 Make sure that the casting compound coveres the entire mould up to the edges all the way around by using the stirring stick to push it down on all sides.
10 Remove air bubbles by tilting the edge into the base all the way around – do this repeatedly for 2-3 minutes.
11 Allow the casting compound to harden in the mould. This takes around 90–240 minutes and depends primarily on how much water you mixed in. Once hardened, it should be easy to remove from the mould.
12 Sand the bottom and edges with a sanding sponge dipped in water.
13 Also sand the front until the beautiful terrazzo pattern can be seen.
14 The amount of paint mixed into the water determines the final colour. For example, 5 ml results in a light grey colour, while 10 ml creates anthracite grey.
